Týn School in the Old Town Square – description and history

Týnská škola (eng: Týn School) neighbouring on Dům U Kamenného zvonu (eng: House at the Stone Bell) has always been an educational institution. This significant function has belonged to it already since the 13th century. What the school had looked like in the time of its founding and what changes it had been through until the present day will be discussed in the following article.

Construction of the school
Let´s transfer to the eastern side of the square where another important sight – Týnská škola (Týn School) – is to be found close to the Church of Our Lady in front of Týn. There used to stand two Gothic 13th- and 14th-century middle-class houses in place of the school. By connecting of those houses and their consequent Renaissance reconstruction a sight came into existence which nowadays represents one of the main features of the Old Town Square. Only the entirely original Gothic vaults which are located in the archway of the construction have survived until today. Those vaults are considered one of the the oldest ever.
Description of the building
The main feature of the house is doubtlessly the main face of the house. Above a piece of the archway there are rectangular windows settled in one line with a fresco in their centre representing the Assumption of Mary. It dates back to the 18th century. In the upper part of the house it is on both sides finished by a stepped curly gable. The both gables are separated from each other by a smaller round turret which is finished by a small battlement. There are also tiny decorative loopholes in the turret. It is also interesting that the remains of the original Renaissance sgraffiti coming from the construction period of the school have survived in the house yard until today.

History
The existence of the Latin school by the Church of Our Lady before Týn was already recorded in the 13th century. At that time Master Walther was lecturing here. He was also a court doctor of the soverigns John of Luxembourg and his son, the Emperor and King Charles IV. In the 15th century a famous architect Matěj Rejsek of Prostějov, the builder of the neighbouring Powder Tower, was teaching here. In the 15th and 16th centuries the school was promoted to higher school which in general helped raise its reputation. The year 1862 was important, too, because the Latin school started to teach in Czech as well. A few years later it moved from the existing building to St. James´ Church. Since 1990 there has also been a secondary school of the catholic faith here, known as Collegium sanctissimae Mariae.

Prague 1 still belongs to one of the most attractive parts of the whole Prague. Probably nowhere else you can find such a concentration of historic monuments and places where the history and romance of bygone times are all around you. Hardly anywhere you can walk on the same paths where were walking Franz Kafka, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the Golem of Prague.
