The Powder Gate – storage of gun powder

If you were looking for the most important Prague´s gate you would find yourself in front of the monument we want to present you in this article. Not only the coronation parades of the Bohemian kings used to pass through the gate because it was the beginning of the Coronation – Royal Route towards the Prague Castle but one of the main East-Bohemian roads was passing through it which led for instance from Kutná Hora.

A bit of history
The gate originated from the projects of the architects Václav and Matěj Rejsek. The foundation stone of the gate was layed in 1475. Thank to the second named architect a gorgeous sculptural decoration was performed which cannot be overlooked by anybody´s sights. It is interesting to know that the construction started in unbelievable nine meters of depth under the level of the present surface, at the bottom of the ditch at that time. The passage through the gate was possible with help of the fortification bridge which completely disappeared after filling the ditch. After the royal residence moved from the Old Town back to the Prague Castle in 1488 the gate remained incomplete.
The construction works continue..
A few years later, exactly in 1592, the construction works were revived again. The contemporary Prague Mayor controlled the construction in person. The gate gained quite a new entrance at that period which replaced the entrance from the gallery and further a new spiral staircase which is still in full operation these days. The original name under which the gate was familiar was „New“. It gained its current name in the 18th century due to its function of a gun powder storage.

What can it offer to its visitors?
All the damaged decorations had to be removed from the building in 1817 due to shooting of the Prussians. A few years later it could have been proud of the clock which did not survive long, either. The original Gothic building was due to number of reconstructions reshaped into the pseudo-Gothic style. We can find several construction elements here, such as the stellar and tracery vaults. The construction is richly decorated by the statues of the Bohemian kings. Face to face you can meet czech king George of Poděbrady and Vladislav II.,
Přemysl Otakar II. and Charles IV. and close to them you can see the emblems of the lands over which they used to reign. There are angels flying above the monarchs and the lion stands proudly on the corner columns – the symbol of the Czech nationhood with the emblem of the Old Town. Beside the monarchs, there are also images of the Czech patrons and saints and the emblems of the Czech royal towns. The roof with 6-meter-high pinnacles contains the signs from the visitors from all over the world whereas the oldest one dates back to 1821.
The curiosities
The Powder Gate is 65 meters high, the seightseeing gallery is to be found in the height of 44 meters and the extant spiral staircase has 186 stone stairs. It was originally founded at the bottom of a defensive ditch and it gained the name „Powder Gate“ because of the gun powder which was stored inside. Beside the statues of the monarchs and emblems of the royal towns there are also slightly erotic motives on the gate walls which you can see in the the wall neighbouring with the Municipal House. You can also notice a smaller niche in the wall – a medieval toilet called „garderobe“.

Prague 1 still belongs to one of the most attractive parts of the whole Prague. Probably nowhere else you can find such a concentration of historic monuments and places where the history and romance of bygone times are all around you. Hardly anywhere you can walk on the same paths where were walking Franz Kafka, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the Golem of Prague.
