The gardens premises The palace gardens under the Prague Castle - Entry
The complex of the palace gardens is composed of five gardens. They are called Ledeburská, Malá and Velká Pálffyovská, Kolowratská and Malá Fürstenberská gardens. The whole premises reaches the area of 7.710 square meters. The gardens are interconnected. The unique atmosphere is created by nightly illumination which attracts couples in love for pleasant evening walks.

The palace gardens under the Prague Castle - Ledeburská garden The history
The southern slope where the gardens stretch used to have mainly defensive purpose in the past. This function was no more up-to-date in the 16th century and they started to pull the fortifications down. Gradually, the parcels on the slope were purchased by the aristocrats and rich citizens. Step by step smaller gardens were established at the contemporary houses which served especially for planting of various products for the people´s livings. However, the vineyards had been here for the longest period. In 1580 a giant garden – Fürstenbergská garden nowadays – was founded. A little later another big garden grew here which was located behind the today´s Pálffy Palace. There used to be vineyards instead of gardens behind the Ledeburg Palace. No gardens were there before 1624.

What can we see here? The palace gardens under the Prague Castle - Fürstenberská garden

These splendid parks were built in the Renaissance style according to the design of the Italian gardens. After the siege of Prague by the Swedish troops in 1648 the whole beautiful complex was damaged. The modifications that had to be carried out for their preservation were propecia without prescription baroque already. The balustrade terraces were richly decorated with statues, a beautiful monumental staircase and the fountains and waterworks for the final touch of perfection were added. Furher, galleries and magnificent pavilions were built around the individual palaces. So the visitors were not only attracted by the gorgeous rich decorations of the gardens but also the precious and exceptional view of the Prague panorama was the target.

The present
The mighty strap of the beautiful gardens was separated from the surrounding world by huge walls. These areas have representative purpose these days. All kinds of cultural and social events, concerts, weddings, press conferences, banquets and many other interesting events are held here.

Prague 1 still belongs to one of the most attractive parts of the whole Prague. Probably nowhere else you can find such a concentration of historic monuments and places where the history and romance of bygone times are all around you. Hardly anywhere you can walk on the same paths where were walking Franz Kafka, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the Golem of Prague.
