Prague Castle – III. Courtyard with the seat of the president of the Republic

The third courtyard founded around 1541 is one of the most widely visited tourist sites.   A fire broke out in the same year in the courtyard and buried all the buildings which had been built in the Middle Ages.  Let’s focus on the biggest castle courtyard which houses many  treasures of our country. We can start, for example with the biggest bell in Bohemia. Next, in this court, in the southern tract we find the seat of the President of the Czech Republic.

Archaeological excavations: Prague castle - III. Courtyard
Thanks to archaeological research maps of the original appearance of the courtyard and some more historical facts were discovered. There have been found clay ramparts from the mid 10th and 11th century, a burial-ground, remains of wooden cottages from the10th century, also remains of Romanesque and Gothic houses from later periods, the Church of St. Bartholomew and the main road of the Slavic settlement. All mentioned findings are well-kept under the concrete structure and granite tiles which were implemented according to the draft of J. Plecnik, at a time when the Castle was the seat of President Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, who summoned J. Plecnik.

PRAGUE 1 MONUMENTS  CENTRAL

Courtyard Beauty: III. Courtyard - St. Vitus Cathedral
The  dominating feature of the whole courtyard is St. Vitus Cathedral. You will learn more about this important religious monument from the next material. The cathedral, more precisely, its southern side forms the whole northern side of the third courtyard. The cathedral tower reaches a height of 99.6 m; thereby its walkway offers to the visitors a breathtaking view of the whole city. There are four Renaissance bells hanging in the tower; one of them is Sigismund bell, dating from 1549.  It is the largest bell in Bohemia. It’s cast in bronze and its height is 203 cm. The clock tower of the cathedral comes from the time of Rudolph II.. The upper clock-face with a diameter of 425 cm shows the hours.  The lower clock-face with a diameter of 383 cm shows quarter hours. Near the tower you can see the ceremonial entrance that leads to the Golden Gate. Don’t forget to take your time here and see the mosaic, located at the top of the gate.   A mosaic called The Last Judgment dates from 1370 – 1371.

Old presbytery: Prague castle - III. Courtyard - Granite monolith
Near the cathedral is located the building of the old presbytery. Initially, it was a Romanesque Bishop’s Palace. The current Baroque style of the building comes from the reconstruction of the seventeenth century. From the same historical period comes also a portal and a corner statue where Saint Wenceslaus is depicted. .

PRAGUE  MONUMENTS  CENTRAL

Granite monolith:
A  granite monolith sixteen meters high rises in the third courtyard of Prague Castle.  Where did it actually come from? It was brought from Mrakotina. Originally, it should have been  higher, but during the transportation the stone flew apart. Transportation was funded by T. G. Masaryk who  used his private resources. It was placed on  the tenth anniversary of Masaryk Republic, which took place in 1928. It serves as a memorial to the victims of the First World War. The obelisk was created according to J. Plecnik’s suggestions. That entire colossus from polished noble granite weighing one hundred and ten tons, was supplemented by a two-meter pyramid at the top in 1996.

Prague castle - III. Courtyard - Gothic statue Also you can see here a statue of St. George. This is one of the most significant Czech Gothic statues made of bronze. The statue shows St. George who is fighting with the dragon. Since the statue was damaged several times, in the court you can see only the spear. If you want to see the original, you have to go to the National Gallery. I hope that the tour of the castle courtyard was informative and interesting for you and your family. Next we can explore buildings located in the Castle.
