History of Infant Jesus
Infant Jesus of Prague is a 50 cm tall wax statue. The figure represents the child Jesus. It is a very precious exponate that was made already in the 16th century in Spain. A number of legends are related to the origins of the Infant Jesus of Prague. According to one of them the Infant Jesus had appeared to a monk one day who was so deeply moved by his revelation that he got the statue made. Another legend describes the way how the statue got from Spain to Prague. St. Theresa from Avila, the founder of the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites St. Theresa from Jesus had supposedly presented it to her friend who was leaving for Prague and got the Infant Jesus there.
Miraculous powers of the Infant Jesus
The first historical records about the Infant Jesus of Prague date back to 1628. In that year Polyxena von Lobkowitz presented the statue to the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites. Later, after the statue had ben displayed in the Church of Our Lady Victorious in the Lesser Town, people started to believe that the Infant Jesus had miraculous powers. So the Praguers came to see the Infant Jesus more frequently and in the hard times they asked him for help. People from all over the world were coming to the Lesser Town to ask the miraculous child for recovery or help.
Statue of the Infant Jesus
Infant Jesus was carved out of. Then the wooden statue was covered with cloth and moulded with help of coloured wax. The graceful face of the child is lined by fair curly hair. The Infant Jesus, wearing only a dress, is placed on a squared pedestal. Its raised right hand is a symbol of blessing. Its left palm is turned up and holds a golden apple. It symbolizes the world domination.
Since long ago, the statue had always been dressed in splendid dress and decorated by precious jewels. All the clothes were gradually presented to the child by the devotees. The oldest extant dress was presented to the Infant Jesus by the Emperor Ferdinand III. In his collection the Infant Jesus has more than a hundred precious dresses and some of them you can see in the local museum exposition. The statue is wearing clothes in colour of the current liturgical period defined by the religious calendar. The Infant Jesus is dressed in the royal dress with an ermine mantle only during coronation ceremonies.
