Curiosities related to the Straka Academy

Pha1 - Strakova akademie033The operation of the academy was supported by the Straka foundation. The organization provided financial support of the academy from the Earl Straka´s sources. The academy was interesting not just because of this financial support enabling the impoverished or poor sons from noble families to get their education.

The Straka Academy However, not quite traditional subjects were taught here as in other Prague public institutions. The academy provided education for its students in subjects such as singing, drawing, horse riding and also music. Because there was a fencing room in the premises students could learn the art of fencing which was untypical for other schools in general.

To give you an idea, the Straka foundation charged scholarships thirty to sixty students. However, between 1801 ad 1807 an official notification was received based on which the amount of the provided scholarhips had to be decreased.

The Straka Academy Construction of the building
The building of the academy was built in 1891 – 1896. There were twenty six students in the first year, later their number grew to sixty. St. Wenceslas Chapel and a prison where barrators from the whole institute were put were part of the premises. We need to mention that the Straka Academy was the first building in Prague with central heating.

If you carefully look at the cupola of the government residence you will notice two statues. They come from Josef Moudro´s workshop and they are called Patriotism and Piety.

There are certain rumors about the Academy building and its underground shelter. The shelter is supposed to be connecting the government offices with the previous building of the Central Comittee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party through a corridor leading beneath the river Vltava( Moldau).

Prague 1 still belongs to one of the most attractive parts of the whole Prague. Probably nowhere else you can find such a concentration of historic monuments and places where the history and romance of bygone times are all around you. Hardly anywhere you can walk on the same paths where were walking Franz Kafka, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the Golem of Prague.
