Convent of St. George The beginning:
The convent was established in 976. Years later, the convent buildings were annexed to the church of St. George. It became a convent church and was used by the female Order of St. Benedictine. There were several reconstructions during which galleries for clergywomen and underground rooms for relics were built. The convent was originally the burial ground of Premysl family. However, later, the remains were relocated it the Basilica of St. Vitus.

Scriptorium:
In the 13th century the so called St George’s scriptorium was established in the convent together with the canonry. Some manuscripts and smaller literary work were believed to originate there in the late 12th century. During the establishment of the scriptorium, the Mother Superior was Sofia. She abdicated in 1302 and Kunhuta Premysl became the new Mother Superior. Sofia was of Czech origin and she brought a Czech scribe to the convent. Thanks to him most common prayer texts were translated into Czech language.

Convent of St. George - interior Through the history:
The Emperor Charles IV also had a merit in the development of the convent by taking up a family tradition. Thainks to him the convent became a very important spiritual centre. He also kept the

cult of the martyr of St. Ludmila, which is evidenced by rich presents sent to the convent. One of them is a silver helmet of St Ludmila which is   presently kept in the National Gallery in the convent of St. Agnes.

PRAGUE 1 MONUMENTS  CENTRAL

During Hussite Wars, the convent was plundered, nuns had to fleet away and the property of the convent was sold up. After the Wars, the following rulers were trying to renovate the spiritual centre. One of the most significant objects from that period is a Renaissance portal with the scene of St. George killing a dragon situated above the southern entrance into the Basilica. In 1541 the building was seized by fire due to which the convent got today’s Renaissance look. Other reconstructions followed, e.g. the chapel of St. Johan of Nepomucene was reconstructed in the 18th century. On 7 March 1782 the convent was closed upon an imperial decree. Despite public resistance, the buildings were handed over to the property of military treasury became army barracks.
