Church of Our Lady of Victory – basic information

Kostel Panny Marie Vítězné (eng. Church of Our Lady of Victory or Church of the Virgin Mary the Victorious) in the Lesser Town can appeal to some of you as quite a common sacred construction. However, the opposite is true. It is an exceptional significant architectural monument protecting the worldwide adored statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague behind its walls.

The church was built on the initiative of the German speaking Lutherans between 1611-1613. After its completion it was consecrated to the Holy Trinity. After the Battle of the White Mountain the Emperor Ferdinand II presented the church to the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites. In 1625, it was consecrated to Our Lady Victorious and to St. Anthony of Padua. The current tower was attached to in in1669. The church used to neighbour the monastery of the Barefoot Carmelites. The abolished monastery is nowadays residence of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.
Church chapels
The main feature of the church is certainly its impressive facade. It was built in 1664. Above the church entrance you can spot the statue of Our Lady with the Child. After we enter the church we can continue to two chapels. They are separated from each other by a gilded latticework. The chapel of Our Lady with the merciful statue of Madonna from 1626 in a glass box is on the right. The opposite chapel is called kaple svatého Kříže (Chapel of the Holy Cross). The Infant Jesus of Prague was placed in there between 1656 – 1776.
Church interior
Let´s focus on the main altar. It was performed in the shape of the triumphal arch by Tomáš od Ježíše in 1717. The statues on the altar demonstrate symbolize St. Theresa and St. John the Baptist and the prophets Elias and Elisha. In the upper part there is a copy of the small painting with the Christmas themes: Our Lady with Joseph and the shepherds leaning above the creche. Along the sides of the church we can also see a smaller altar and a pulpit. However, you should especially focus on the altar of the Infant Jesus on the right. The statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague – the reason why thousands of believers from all over the world come to visit the church – is placed here in a glass box.

Prague 1 still belongs to one of the most attractive parts of the whole Prague. Probably nowhere else you can find such a concentration of historic monuments and places where the history and romance of bygone times are all around you. Hardly anywhere you can walk on the same paths where were walking Franz Kafka, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the Golem of Prague.
