Life in the name of the Torah

The fundamental document of Judaism is the Torah, or Pentateuch, also called The Five Books of Moses because it is composed of five main parts. Each book consequently describes the oldest history of the Jews and constitues the essence of the Old Testament. The Torah is written in Hebrew and tells about the origin of the Israelites and also about Abraham, the forefather of the Jewish nation. The sacred text is most frequently written on the srcolls fixed on wooden bars. The Torah is in particular used for religious purposes.

The most important Jewish festivals
The Jewish festivals particularly originate from the old Testament. During every festival certain directions are followed. During the Sabbath most work is forbidden, and during services the Torah is read. Other holiday is Jom kipur or Reconciliation Day when all work is forbidden, and all offices and markets are closed. There is no television broadcasting and people cannot wear any leather garments. It is the most sacred day of the Jewish calendar. In the period of the Christian Xmas the Jews celebrate a festival called Hanukkah or Festival of Lights. It lasts eight days, when candles on the nine-branched candelabrum are kinded, one each day.
Genesis of Israel
Originally, the Jews had been scattered all over the world. Yet in 1948 they lived to see their own state, Israel. Then the Palestinian territory was divide in two parts, the Arabic and the Jewish which was followed by numerous conflicts between the inhabitants. Finally a peace treaty was written, which was however refused by the radical movements in a short time. The situation in Israel has not been solved until today because of the contemporary great influence of the radical resistance movement Hamas in Palestina. The entire area ranks among the world´s most frequent centres of tension.
