The Royal Route and coronation of the kings of Bohemia
The Royal Route is not a name of any Prague street and we would even not find it on the map. Yet it is frequently mentioned in traveller´s guides and belongs to the most often visisted places. We all know it, almost everybody has been there during the walks through Prague but what actually do we know about it?
What kind of route is it? A traditional route where the festive coronation processions of the Bohemian sovereigns used to walk along before the actual act of coronation.
In this traveller´s guide we will introduce to you the route which became stabilized after centuries of smaller variations and which is the most familiar these days.
The Royal Coronation route starts in Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square), where once Royal Courtyard, the second residence of the kings of Bohemia, used to be, it continues through Celetná street towards Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square).
The route will take us over Karlův most (Charles Bridge) and further to Malá strana (Lesser Town). The route went on from Malostranské náměstí (Lesser Town Square) uphill along Nerudova ulice (Nerudova street) towards Pražský hrad (Prague Castle).
In this traveller´s guide we will do the sightseeing tour of this route for you and we will draw your attention to the most interesting places, historical events and landmarks of the route.
As a bonus of the first part of the traveller´s guide we offer the historical development of the Royal Route to you and especially the description of the coronation of the Bohemian kings. We believe that you will experience many new adventures on the Royal Route and that you will put yourself into the times when the royal processions were passing through Prague and people were celebrating the new king who they layed their hopes on.
