There is a number of historical buildings in Prague which are considered gems of the national architecture. One of them is also the Rudolfinum on Jan Palach Square (Palachovo náměstí).
Due to its grandiosity it became residence of the Chamber of Deputies for several years. At present we can experience unforgettable moments during concerts of the Czech Philharmonic or other significant social events. Now we want to introduce the impressive building to you.

Beginning of the Rudolfinum
The Rudolfinum was constructed between 1876 – 1881. The contemporary Jan Palach Square was determined to be the right place for that exceptional building. The construction was performed under direction of architects Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz. They created a unique neo-renaissance building that due to its opulence and grandiosity could not be used for any other but representative purposes. In honour of the successor of the Habsbourg throne, Archduke Rudolf, the building was called the Rudolfinum. The Rudolfinum was mainly used for important cultural events, concerts and exhibitions.
Ever-present opulence
What makes the Rudolfinum so special these days is without doubt the rich sculptural decoration of the exterior which cannot be passed unnoticed. These unique sculptural works were made by the prestigious Czech but also foreign masters. The admirable works represent composers and artists of all historical periods. The sculptural decorations can also be found in the interior. It was created in the workshop of the meritorious sculptor Bohuslav Schnirch.
From culture to politics
However, the Rudolfinum was not only used for cultural purposes. In 1919, great construction works were performed in the Rudolfinum because the building was meant to become a residence of the Deputy Chamber. A decision was taken to rebuild some of the exceptional concert halls and exhibition spaces into offices, canteens and even deputy clubs were established in the building. The Chamber of Deputies resided here until 1940 when the Government decided to return the original appearance to the Rudolfinum. The former concert halls and representative spaces were therefore restored so we can again enjoy a unique cultural experience in the impressive spaces.

Unique spaces of the Rudolfinum
There are nearly one thousand rooms behind the walls of the Rudolfinum. Richly decorated exhibition spaces are accompanied by representative chambers. However, let´s peep into the most prestigious part of the Rudolfinum. It is the so-called Dvořákova síň (Dvořák Hall) which due to its gorgeous decorations and perfect acoustics became the scene of the most important concerts and social events. They are performed either at Suk or Kubelík Hall. At present the building is a residence of the Czech Philharmonic and the Rudolfinum Gallery.
