Prague Castle – Revealed Secret
Let´s visit the secret and for the public unavailable premises of the Prague Castle which many of us do not have a clue about.
-
The Golden Saloon
The Golden Saloon is one of the many places where only significant guests of the head of the state can get. It is a room with walls covered in gold leaf. There are tiny replicas by the author Damián Pešan hanging over the entrance door. This man used to be a wood carver who was introduced to Castle as Josip Plečnik´s helper. The Golden Saloon was last reconstructed twenty years ago when its walls were regilded. President Václav Klaus has lunches with his significant guests in this saloon.
The Impluvium
During the five years of Plečnik´s construction of the housing for T.G.Masaryk in Castle several gems have originated here. The first room that the president could see after entering his new home was the Impluvium. It is a sort of magnificent anteroom leading into other rooms. The floor in the room is made of polished granite and there is a granite reservoir with a fountain in the centre. It is used for short meetings of Václav Klaus with the press these days. The anteroom of the president´s office is non-stop patrolled by the castle guard. Another water stream was installed by Plečnik also in the Lion´s Chamber where water springs from the lion´s head which is set into the niche.
The underground tunnel
There is an underground tunnel between the second and third courtyard. It was built in order to prevent possible impact of the general public during the president´s transfers within the scope of the Castle. The tunnel is used also by the current president. It was built by the famous architect J. Plečnik.
Prague Castle underground
Now we will make it for the Prague Castle underground which has not been entirely inspected so far. There is the St. Vitus Cathedral tomb to be found in the underground of the whole Castle premises, the basement underneath the individual constructions and Plečnik´s presidential tunnel. There is another matter of interest – extensive labyrinth of the underground corridors located underneath Jelení příkop (Deer´s Moat). The labyrinth was constructed to be a shelter for president Gottwald and his family. The corridors were probably meant to be connected to other spaces underneath the Letná district. The construction was initiated by Gottwald, then the works continueed in 1968 however the whole system has never been completed. The space is airconditioned and water is being pumped away from the lowest areas in order to prevent their flooding. The corridors currently serve as an archeological depository. However, they are not the only underground corridors within the frame of the Castle. There is another corridor connecting the Castle premises with Míčovna (the Great Ball-Game House).
So that was a listing of several places whose existence most of us do not have a clue about. Therefore we are happy that we were alowed to introduce them to you, at least partially.
