History of the University:
Students from all over Europe – from England, France and mainly from Germany – were coming to the newly established university. The university was teaching so-called General Studies (studium generale) meaning that the masters and graduates of the contemporary four faculties (juristic, medical, theological and philosophical) were allowed to operate in all countries acknowledged by the Roman-Catholic Church.
Karolinum came into existence in 1383 due to the reconstruction of an opulent house of the mint master Rotlev of Kutná Hora. However, from the original building of Karolinum only the richly decorated Gothic bow window, the original part of the university chaple, Gothic cross vault in the corridor and a few other segments had been preserved. The exterior of the building has Baroque features with well-preserved and partly uncovered Gothic elements. There is a spacious 17th century hall inside the building penetrating the first and second storeys of the construction. Karolinum is also the former working place of the university professor and reformer Master Jan Hus and after his death the university became the centre of the religious reformatory movement . At the beginning of the 17th century after the battle of White Mountain (Bílá hora) the Jesuits gained the building and removed everything that commemorated the Hussite era from it.
The contemporary building hasd been modified by the architect Jaroslav Frágner and it is the oldest, still fully used university building of Europe.
