Jewish Town Hall
Jewish Town Hall – a place where the wall clock goes counterclockwise. This old Jewish Town Hall(czech: Židovská radnice) ranks among the few monuments of Prague-Josefov which have survived the extensive demolitions related to the sanation programs of the Prague´s Jewish ghetto leading to improvement of standard of living and hygienic conditions of the commuity.

Construction of synagogues was the most important to Jews because they were very religious. They did not take care for the construction of the town halls and similar administrative facilities because the major part of their lives took place in the synagogues just like the administration of the whole community or for instance education.
After the poor history the Jews started to prosper during the rule period of Rudolph II when Prague was the centre of the intellectuals, scientists and other interesting personalities who markedly contributed to the town´s prosperity.

Mordechai Maisel became one of the richest men who was at last lending his financial means to the entire imperial court . Due to him many Jewish monuments were built such as Maisel Town Hall or the Renaissance High Syangogue which also used to be called „Radniční“ (Town Hall´s) because it was part of the Jewish Town Hall.
The already mentioned Maisel Town Hall was built by a noted architect Panacius Roder at the end of the 16th century. The new Late Baroque remodelling of the Town Hall was carried out by to the architect Josef Schlesinger in 1763. The architect Matěj Blecha extended the building later, namely in 1908, by adding the south wing.
It is a two storey building with a mansard roof located on the corner of Maiselova street. One of the oldest parts of the building is the space in the north part of its basement with a square layout area, originally arched by the cross ribbed vault. There is a wooden turret with a clock on the Town Hall´s roof which ranks among the rarities and attractions of the Jewish Community, being pride of this town hall. It is the clock on whose clock-face there are Hebrew numbers and the hands placed on the clock and which move counterclockwise. Therefore the clock ranks among the most visited attractions of the Jewish Community. So when you are walk along the Old Cemetery definitely do not forget to pay attention to this interesting historical landmark.
