There are six gorgeous gardens in the Prague Castle premises in total. In the north side we will find the greatest gem among the gardens, the Royal Garden(czech: Královská zahrada), which not only covers the largest area but also contains uncountable number of very important historical buildings and other curiosities. Further in the north part we will find the garden On the terrace of the Riding Hall (czech: Jízdárna). On the contrary, there is a garden called „Na Baště“ in the north part. They are called the Garden of Eden (czech: Rajská zahrada),the Garden on the Ramparts (czech: Na Valech) and the Hartig Garden (czech: Hartigovská zahrada) . Let´s visit them one by one. We will highlight the interesting points and see the individual green grace of the Prague Castle.
Royal Garden – the greatest gem
Our first stop will be the Royal Garden. This gem among the gardens was founded by Ferdinand I. of Habsburg in 1534. The gorgeous Renaissance garden was growing in the place of the former vineyards. The garden used to be significant because mainly botanical rarities and exotic plants were grown here. This vegetation descended mainly from distant countries which was really exceptional for that period of time. To prevent the nobility from boredom some buildings were constructed here which were basically supposed for entertainment. It was for instance Královský letohrádek (Royal Summer Palace) which was later used as an astrological observatory. Further the so-called Míčovna (the ball-game hall) and also Lví dvůr (Lion´s Court) were built here. The present image is conceived in English 19th-century-style but we will also find some Renaissance and even Baroque features here. The garden can be enetered through several gates – from the street U Prašného mostu in the west, through the north gate at the Royal Summer Palace or you can enter the gardens through the east gate from Chotkovy sady (park).
Upwards the terrace of Jízdárna (the Riding Hall)
Close to this garden you can visit the garden Na tesase Jízdárny (On the Terrace of the Riding Hall) located in the north part. This small park was built between 1950 – 1956. There is a curiosity – the construction was established on the roofs of the garages and auto repair service of the President´s Office.

Plečnik´s Garden „Na Baště“
The garden Na Baště is to be found at the entrance of the Spanish Hall. The current shape of the garden is the work of the architect Josip Plečnik. He wanted to perform it in the style of Italian and Japanese gardens. The name is derived from the medieval Prague Castle fortifications. The best way to reach the garden is from Prašný most (Gunpowder Bridge) where you will walk along the north wing of the Castle.
Paradise Garden
On the south hills there is the Paradise Garden(Rajská zahrada) which is connected to the private garden of the archduke Ferdinand. Its appearance, again, is the work of the architect Plečnik. The garden can be entered from Hradčanské náměstí from the top of the New Castle Stairs.

The Garden Na Valech (the Garden on the Ramparts)
The garden Na Valech forms the major part of the south Prague Castle´s front face. It was transformed into a natural park in the 19th century. You will reach it via The Garden of Eden or from the Old Castle Stairs from Opyš.
Hartigovská zahrada (the Hartig Garden) at last
The last of the gardens is called Hartigovská (the Hartig Garden). Beside the splendid flower species you can see Hudební pavilon (Music Pavilion) here. The garden was joined to the garden Na Valech (Garden on the Ramparts) in 1960´s.
The gardens located in the neighbourhood of the Prague Castle will impress not only the botany-lovers. Even those who like looking at historical buildings will come into their own in the garden premises. The historical circumstances of the origin of the gardens are interesting, too. These facts and even more you can discover during your walks through the parks. There is an exceptional view from below of the whole Prague Castle premises.
